If I had to describe today’s Andrew Cuomo news conference in one word, that word would be defiant.
Yes, he apologized and said he was embarrassed, but he also dared the legislature to make good on threats to revoke his emergency powers, noting that lawmakers can do so any time as long as they have the votes.
He made it clear he has no plans to resign, suggesting that New Yorkers need him to shepherd the state through the budget process and other challenges.
And he responded to sexual harassment complaints by saying it was never his intent to make anyone feel unconformable.
Perhaps of more significance: He was not asked one question about COVID-19 deaths at nursing homes, an issue that he has come under fire on from members of both parties.
Put it all together; defiant fits the story.
Richard Lee, executive director of the Jandoli Institute, covered politics and government as a reporter and later served as Deputy Director of Communication for two New Jersey governors.
